Sentara Group products found to inhibit common pathogens

BSF protein and oil are rich in putative antimicrobials such as antimicrobial peptides (AMP), biopolymers, namely chitin in the case of protein, and chemical complexes that could act alone or synergically with fatty acids. Lauric Acid, C-12 medium-chain triglycerides, and AMP found in BSF are vital natural and safe ingredients to remedy and prevent diseases in livestock and aquaculture, thus allowing the reduction of antibiotic use. The R&D team conducted a series of experiments to quantify the antimicrobial effects of our products.

Our Findings

Anti-Pathogenic Properties of Hi.Protein® and Hi.Dried®.

A trial assessed the antimicrobial activity of Hi.Protein® and BSF larvae against E. coli, Salmonella sp., & Staphylococcus aureus. Non-aqueous extracts of Hi.Protein® and BSF larvae displayed antimicrobial effects on Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, likely due to antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) and lauric acid.

Aqueous extracts showed activity against Gram-negative bacteria only, highlighting the role of AMPs. Hi.Oil® also demonstrated antimicrobial properties against both types of bacteria, with S. aureus being more sensitive. Overall, Hi.Protein®, Hi.Oil®, & Hi.Dried® exhibit anti-pathogenic effects beneficial for the animal feed industry.
